Options investing can help the smart investor profit from a rise or fall in the stock market. At its most basic, options investing involves using call (buy) and put (sell) options as a way to profit on movement in the market, whether that movement is upward or downward. Options are often used as insurance against many different trading eventualities, much as your home or car insurance is a hedge against an unanticipated disaster. Options also allow you to control shares of a particular stock while not tying up a lot of capital in your stock trading account.

In a volatile trading environment, options investing can provide relief from the uncertainty of the more straightforward investing practices. You can use options to protect you from a drop in the market price of a long stock or an increase in the market price of a short stock. You can use options investing to profit from a move in the price of a stock regardless of whether the market for that stock goes up or down.

Markets may go up, down, or sideways. When you're placing an options trade, you must first assess potential market movement. If you believe the market is going up, you can buy calls, or sell puts. You can also combine short and long options and their underlying stocks in a bewildering variety of tactics. The goal of these tactics is to limit risk while profiting from movement in the market.

Options investing requires a certain amount of creativity in your trades, and you have to be willing to stomach some risk, particularly as you learn the ropes.
