Equity Options

If you exercise a call (buy) or put (sell) equity option before the expiration date for equity options, the stock will be delivered to or taken from your brokerage account at that time. If you own an equity option you can exercise the contract any time before the exercise deadline set by the brokerage firm. The expiration date for equity options is generally the Saturday after the third Friday of a month. If that Friday is a holiday, then the Thursday preceding the holiday is the deadline. Like Cinderella's coach, the option disappears at a specified time on the expiration date.

Equity options on stocks or on cash indexes are used by investors to insure their portfolio's value. It is similar to the insurance premium you pay for your house or your car as a hedge against a fire, disaster, or car crash.

Equity options are very flexible and versatile. They can be wildly speculative or solidly conservative. You can use options to do the following:

* Benefit from a rise in stock price without the cost of buying the stock
* Increase income against a stock holding
* Prepare to buy stock when its price falls
* Protect your stock holdings from price declines

The most basic equity options are buying puts and buying calls. Options allow you to stake a market position in an effort to profit from an upward or a downward move in the market. Options buyers are also able to take advantage of limited, predetermined risk. Those who write options take on large risks if they don't hedge their positions.
