Options Strategies

Buying a stock option lets you buy the right, but not the requirement to purchase a certain stock at a pre-determined price on a pre-determined expiration date. To do this, you'll put down a premium (a "down payment") on the option. Between the day you buy the option and the expiration date, the price of that stock might increase dramatically (but you still get to buy at the pre-determined price), or it might decrease dramatically (but you can exercise your choice to not buy the stock). If you don't buy the stock on the expiration date, you lose the premium. But the premium would be a smaller loss than if you bought the (diminished value) stock at the price you agreed to pay.

There are several options strategies. Options strategies can be bullish, bearish, or neutral. Because neutral strategies are more complex still, they will not be discussed here.

Bullish options strategies reflect a trader's expectation that a particular stock price will rise. The trader estimates how high the stock can go and how long the rally will last to optimize the trade. The most basic bullish options strategy is call buying. These are fairly simple and can result in a healthy return on investment.

Bearish options strategies reflect a trader's expectation that a stock price will fall. The trader estimates how low the stock can go and how long the slide will last in order to optimize the trade. The fundamental bearish options strategy is put buying. The mirror of call buying, this, too can result in a good ROI.
